Monomoy Middle School Students Spread Kindness With Handmade Cards

As part of monthly service challenges throughout the entire school, Monomoy Regional Middle School students created 1,185 cards throughout the month of November. This card drive was a school-wide effort, with all students making at least one card and most making many more. The cards will be distributed to elderly people on the Cape, shipped to active and wounded military, and delivered to special people in the students’ lives. For the community delivery of the cards, MRMS partnered with a local organization, Potted Plants for Seniors, whose founder, Sarah Dennis, has been supplying local seniors with plants to brighten their homes and gardens during this challenging time. In recognition of this project, Potted Plants for Seniors presented Monomoy Middle School with its 2020 Community Outreach Award, “For going above and beyond to remind seniors and veterans that they are loved, appreciated, and not forgotten, in a time when they truly need it most.” Dennis presented the award to MRMS students Dec. 11. 

High School Solar Goes Live

The 239.49 kilowatt photovoltaic system installed on the roof of Monomoy High School is now live, the Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative reported last week. The solar array will reduce the school’s energy bills by about $40,000 annually. The completed rooftop solar system at the high school was installed in cooperation with the town of Harwich and will produce 282,200 kWh of electricity per year, according to CVEC. The energy will eliminate approximately 200 metric tons of CO2.

“As a school district, preparing the next generation for a bright future is imperative,” said Superintendent of Schools Scott Carpenter. “This begins with a strong educational foundation, and with CVEC we are further enhancing their future through energy sustainability.”
