A Tribute To Spring Senior Athletes

By: Kat Szmit

Senior year is supposed to be filled with memorable milestones, from celebratory events to spring sports. But for high school seniors across the country, including those at Monomoy Regional High School, cancellations have been many and have included the spring season. Over the next few  weeks,  we recognize the MRHS seniors who missed out on a final season. To see this feature, see page 30 of our May 28 elec...

HARWICH – It was a moment Jamie Routhier won’t forget. It was the Monomoy Sharks first basketball overtime against Bourne in the MIAA Div. 3 South playoffs; they were trailing by two with seconds left. Teammate Elijah Beasley fed him the ball, all eyes watching as Routhier leapt, landing on his feet just as the ball went in, the crowd roaring. The irony? Routhier had been off leading up to that game, but the s...

CHATHAM – For Chatham resident and D-Y senior Mark Pawlina, football has been a lifelong passion. Recently, that passion gave a little something back when the Dolphin quarterback received a letter announcing that he’d been selected as one of just 33 student-athletes to be honored by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. It was an award Pawlina might have seen comin...

Update : May 8, 2020 - Golfers eager to return to their favorite pastime received a bit of happy news on May 7 when Gov. Charlie Baker gave the green light for courses across the state to reopen, but don't rush off to the clubhouse just yet as it's likely not open. Though the state has granted permission to courses to reopen, many, including local courses, must seek permission from the towns they're in, and must...

Shortly after Governor Charlie Baker announced on April 21 that schools across the state would remain closed through the end of the academic year, Monomoy baseball catcher Sean Gould drove to Whitehouse Field, crouched down behind home plate, and held his arm out as if prepping for one more catch. It’s a catch that won’t be coming. On April 24, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) vote...

Cape Cod Baseball League Cancels 2020 Season

For the first time since World War II, there will be no summer baseball in Chatham. In fact, there will be no baseball at any of the Cape’s ballparks until 2021 after the Cape Cod Baseball League officially canceled its 2020 season amid concerns regarding COVID-19. News of the cancellation was announced by the League on April 24 via a statement on their website that reads: “ The Cape Cod Baseball League Execut...

It was a day of heartbreak in the local sports world as the MIAA and the Cape Cod Baseball League each voted to cancel their pending seasons. Following the lead of Governor Charlie Baker, who closed schools for the rest of the school year across the state on April 21, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, which oversees high school sports, voted unanimously on April 24 to cancel the spring at...

On Monday morning, Alan Harrison climbed the steps of Orleans Town Hall with a plastic tote of goodies, all for his new online exercise classes. Harrison, the town’s recreation director, is one of many across the region who has plunged into online teaching as a means of keeping people healthy during the COVID closures. “I normally run these classes live,” said Harrison, who teaches Burdenko fitness and tai chi...

HARWICH – When Holly Evans first moved to Cape Cod from Virginia with her family as a kid, she’d never heard of field hockey, let alone considered playing the sport. Fast forward a few years and Evans has parlayed a stellar career at Monomoy Regional High School into a spot with the Bryn Mawr College Owls. Evans began playing the sport in middle school for Chatham when the program only had nine players. Evans ...

Student athletes across the state gave a cautiously optimistic cheer on Monday afternoon when it was announced that the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association approved a shortened spring season for all sports. The MIAA Board of Directors held a two-hour phone conference, voting 12-0, with one abstention, to hold a shortened spring season to begin upon the planned reopening of schools on May 4, at w...

There was a time when Dede Trimble Griesbauer had a promising job on Wall Street. But once she began competing successfully in IronMan contests, her coach urged her to consider leaving the white-collar world behind in favor of going pro. That decision paid off mightily on Feb. 16 when Griesbauer crossed the finish line of Ultraman Florida with a record-setting time of 22:48:31, becoming the fastest female finishe...
