HARWICH – The Kate Gabri show started early Thursday night, with the junior forward scoring less than a minute into the Monomoy girls varsity soccer team’s match against Sturgis East.

But she wasn’t finished. Gabri found the back of the net again just before halftime, giving the Sharks both goals in a 2-0 win over the Storm.

After starting with possession, Monomoy quickly attacked from the wings. Juniors Maddie Crossen and Grace Ventura picked up assists on low crosses into the box which Gabri trapped, touched, and torpedoed into the bottom right corner.

While Gabri was the only Shark to light up the scoreboard, Monomoy was on the offensive all game.

In the first quarter alone, Sturgis East keeper Kristen Duff recorded eight saves as the Sharks constantly broke through the Storm’s back line. Across the pitch, Monomoy senior co-captain and goalie Josie Ganshaw faced minimal pressure, saving only a couple of shots all game.

Maggie Dever, Melissa Velasquez, and Leah Nash relentlessly battled for possession and dissected Sturgis’ defense, pushing the offense forward from all angles.

“We tried to come out really strong and play our style of play,” Gabri said after the game. “Take it slow, take our time, look up, and see what’s open instead of just bombing it down towards the goal.”

Even after back-to-back shutout wins on the week, Gabri still saw room for improvement as the Sharks look to avenge their season-opening loss to Nauset.

“I feel like we just need to communicate a little more,” said Gabri. “We just need to keep that in mind and keep our style of play.”

Last week's victory left the Sharks with a 3-3-1 record thus far this season.
