CHATHAM — The preliminary results of a crash investigation indicate that a teenage driver failed to stop at an intersection when his vehicle collided with police cruiser and a third vehicle on Crowell Road Tuesday night.
Three people, including the officer, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, which heavily damaged all three vehicles.
Police say at around 8:42 p.m., 18-year-old Trenton Andrews of Savoy, Mass., was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee at a high rate of speed eastbound on Northgate Road when it entered the intersection without stopping or yielding. It struck the Ford Explorer police cruiser driven by 40-year-old officer Joshua Wisniewski, who was driving south on Crowell Road. Both vehicles then pushed into a 2014 Jeep Wrangler that was driving north on Crowell Road, operated by 21-year-old Edward McCarthy, III, of Milton, Mass.
Wisniewski sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Cape Cod Hospital. Andrews was not taken to the hospital, but an 18-year old passenger in his vehicle was rushed to the hospital with injuries described as serious not not life-threatening. McCarthy also suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital before being transferred to a Boston hospital.
Wisniewski was on duty at the time of this crash, and was not responding to a call at the time; he was not wearing a body camera, nor was the cruiser equipped with a camera system.
“This investigation is still ongoing and is based upon statements from the vehicle operators, crash reconstruction data which includes but is not limited to: reconstruction measurements and diagrams, retrieved internal vehicle data and several civilian eyewitnesses to the crash,” a Chatham Police news release reads. The investigation is being conducted by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement’s Crash Reconstruction Team and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department. It could be several weeks before the investigation is finalized.
“The Chatham Police Department expresses our well wishes to all individuals who were injured in this crash,” the release reads.
