Ruth E Conner

                CONNER, Ruth E. (Abrahamson) Conner (1927 – 2020), 92, of

Harwich passed away on June 22, 2020 surrounded by her children.

Born and raised in Worcester, Ruth was a gifted seamstress, artist and baker.  Ruth was known for her Swedish coffee bread, donuts, pies and pinwheels.  She often had just baked these sweet treats in time for her children’s and grandchildren’s return from school.

Ruth loved to draw and paint, creating family treasures in watercolor and pastels which hang in the homes of her family.  She often would sit and draw with the kids and even spent time teaching her grandson to paint.

The daughter of a seamstress, Ruth loved to sew and made many special outfits for her children and grandchildren.  She passed along her sewing skills to her daughter, granddaughter and grandson.  In addition to sharing her talents with her family, Ruth worked as a tailor at Jonfred’s men’s store, formerly in Harwich Port, and with Puritan’s Clothing in Chatham and Hyannis.  She had many customers who would come to her house for alternations, often staying and visiting with her for a while.  In the late 60’s and early 70’s, she created outfits for local dancer and dance teacher, Melody Hall for her dance productions and even costumes for Melody’s ballet school students’ recitals.

Her sewing skills also found expression in her crafting.  She was known for her Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls and American Girl Doll clothes which she sold in local craft shows with her sister Helen and her husband Al for over 20 years.

Ruth was a passionate Mom/Grandma and was a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts for her sons and the kids in the neighborhood.  She was a magical person with a talent for surprises.  She could meticulously fold newspapers, open them and delight her children and grandchildren with a boat or new hat.  All the kids remember that on their birthdays she would give the same number of presents as their age (which she stopped once you turned 16).  These were never large presents and might be a slinky, cool pencil or other small trinket which brought anticipation and smiles.  She is the source of hysterical family stories including the legend of “Bob the Clear Ghost”.

Ruth, Ma, Grandma, Great Grandma will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched.  She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Al Conner and son-in-law Shawn Scherer. She is survived by sons Steven Conner (Kim), Peter Conner (Brenda Lundquist), and daughter Ellen Scherer; grandchildren Kyle Conner (Erin) and Kalyn Rambacher (Daniel).

Ruth was thrilled to welcome 3 great grandsons into the family, Lachlan and Paxton Conner and Logan Rambacher.  A new great grandchild is due later this year to Kalyn and Daniel.

A celebration of life will be held later this year.
