BREWSTER – Richard (Dick) Cushing Merigan, 71, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 in Brewster. He is survived by his three children, Leighanne Smith, her husband Scott and children Daniel Deering, Aiden Smith and Blakely Smith of Harwich; Christopher Merigan, his wife Nicole and son Ryder of Centerville; and Jessica Merigan Hawkins and her husband Joshua Hawkins of North Kingstown, R.I. He is also survived by his six siblings Edward Merigan and his wife Debra of Dennis, William Merigan of Rochester, N.Y., Paula Glennon of Harwich, Maryann Merigan of Watertown, Christine Dorman and her husband Garrie of Sagamore Beach and Frances Merigan and partner Michael Tiernan of San Jose, Calif., and his dear friend Grace Buckler of Hyannis.
Richard was born in Quincy to Helen (Murray) Merigan and William Henry Merigan and was baptized by Richard Cardinal Cushing, which was an honor at the time. He grew up in Abington, graduating from Abington High School in 1966. He worked for many years in the financial services industry in Boston. Richard then moved to Harwich, MA where he managed a paint and wallpaper business before joining Shaw’s Supermarkets.
Known for his quick-witted observations on subjects like sports and politics, Richard delighted everyone with his unique take on any topic at the many family gatherings he so enjoyed. Richard was a great athlete in his younger years, excelling at baseball. An avid sports fan, he cheered on all the local sports teams, both college and professional, closely following the Brewster Whitecaps and attending many Cape League games. What brought him the most joy though was cheering on his children and grandchildren in all their sports and activities. He was not effusive but managed to take every opportunity to brag about them.
Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Harwich Fire Association, PO Box 23, Harwich Port, MA 02646.
