ORLEANS - There's no word yet on whether picnic lunches will be encouraged, but the selectmen have decided that the 2020 annual town meeting will be held alfresco.

The town's annual legislative session will be held outdoors Saturday, June 20, at 10 a.m. in the center of Nauset Regional Middle School's running track.  The open-air session will be postponed if it rains.

Town meeting usually takes place in the school gymnasium, but it would have been impossible for participants to maintain proper social distancing in that venue.  Officials considered convening the session in the gyms, auditorium, cafeteria and various small classrooms in the building, linked to the moderator by video connections, but ultimately decided that holding the meeting outdoors was the most practical approach.

The annual town election will be held June 23 with reduced polling hours from noon to 7 p.m. at the council on aging, with everyone urged to request a mailed ballot for early voting.
