HARWICH – The 2019-2020 season was a strong one for Monomoy sports and was capped off this week with the announcement that the Monomoy boys varsity basketball team won its second straight sportsmanship award from the IAABO.
The International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) announced the award on March 16, with the board voting to present the award to the program for its positive actions on the court, extending to those in the stands, as well.
“Congratulations to everyone involved, especially coaches Keith Arnold and Dan Taylor, and Athletic Director Karen Guillemette,” said Max McCarthy, sportsmanship chairman.
The award put a nice exclamation point on the winter season, which was supposed to end with a celebratory winter sports awards night before schools were closed amid COVID-19 concerns. But the closures can’t overshadow some key highlights of the season.
Along with being presented with the Sportsmanship Award, the boys basketball team was also crowned Cape and Islands Lighthouse League Champions, with Jamie Routhier named the Lighthouse MVP. The cheer team reached the South Regional competition, and the Cape Cod Furies girls varsity ice hockey team reached the Div. 1 South playoffs for the first time in program history.
The following student athletes were named Cape and Islands League All Stars:
Boys Basketball: Jamie Routhier, Aidan Melton, Jason Ready, and Joe DeMango.
Girls Basketball: Leah Nash, Caroline DiGiovanni, and Melissa Velasquez.
Boys Ice Hockey: Lucas Tambolleo, Wyatt Archibald, and Charlie Southworth.
Girls Ice Hockey: Nicole Awalt.
Earning Scholar Athlete of the Month awards at MRHS were Jamie Routhier and Nicole Awalt for the month of January, and Lucas Garneau and Leah Nash for the month of February.
