HYANNIS – The Monomoy-Mashpee Monarchs scored first in their Feb. 1 game against the St. John Paul II Lions, but a punishing third period meant another tough loss for the struggling home team.

The Monarchs fell 7-1 on Friday night, with their lone goal coming at 10:25 when Monomoy's Lucas Tambolleo found an opening and slapped the puck through, capitalizing on an assist from teammate Charlie Southworth.

That would be the only goal the home team scored for the game's remainder, though there were chances to come back until the Lions exploded for a decisive third, during which they netted five of their seven goals in the frame.

The Monarchs skated with intensity in the first period, employing solid defense that helped to keep the Lions away from the net, but the second period eroded the home team's confidence, especially after the first SJP2 goal, which never went into the net but instead ricocheted off the post. Nonetheless, the official near the net decided to call it fair, much to the frustration of a handful of Monarch fans.

Even after the Lions put away another goal in the second, there was still a chance the home team Monarchs could overcome the one-goal deficit, but then the SJP2 squad lit up the scoreboard with another goal and just kept going.

The Monarchs drop to 3-8-2 overall. Next up for the team is a trip to Martha's Vineyard for a 4:30 p.m. game on Feb. 12, with their next home game set for Feb. 19 against Greater New Bedford beginning at 7:30 p.m.
