Chatham - Ian Monroe Mott, 95, died Saturday June 22, 2019. He was the husband of the late Janet (Nickerson) Mott, and the son of the late Thomas and Annie (Gosse) Mott.
Ian graduated from Cambridge Academy, Cambridge in 1943 and was immediately drafted in the Army to fight in WWII. He was a mechanic in the 297th and followed General Patton around Western Europe. His unit was the first one to arrive at Buchenwald Concentration Camp at the end of the war. His unit protected and supported those who survived the camp until medical help arrived to help survivors and he was then sent to Dachau to again protect survivors there. He went on Honor Flight New England in April 2017 to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Returning home from the war he met and then married his wife in 1949. They settled in Acton and started their family. In 1963, they moved to Chatham where his wife Janet was born and raised. He was a Real Estate Broker at A. Clinton Brooks and ran the Chatham Print Shop at Shop Ahoy. After retirement, he worked at the Stop and Shop, East Harwich where he still is remembered as the "Muffin man". He was an active member in the Chatham Mason's, and the Cape Cod Shrine Club. He was known as the "tab man" and he couldn't go anywhere without someone giving him a small bag of tabs from soda cans. The money gained from those collections helped pay transportation for children needing the Shriner's Burn Hospital. He dearly loved going out in his boat, fishing, being with family and friends. Most of all he loved all six of his grandchildren!
Ian is survived by two daughters: Cheryl Dumas and her husband Addison of Southwick; Janet Mitchell of S. Chatham. His six grandchildren: Ian Dumas of Springfield, Matthew Mitchell of Montreal, Canada, Thomas Mitchell of Birmingham, Ala., Laura Mitchell of S. Chatham, Emma Mitchell of S. Chatham and Hannah Mitchell of S. Chatham. He also leaves his faithful companion, his black lab, Peggy.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery, Route 137, Harwich, MA on Saturday, July13, 2019 at 11:00 AM. A gathering follows at the St. Martins Masonic Lodge on Old Harbor Road, Chatham, MA.
