CHATHAM – Nancy L. Stoddard, 84, of Chatham, died suddenly on January 3, 2019. Nancy was the daughter of Francis M. and Alton C. Garland of East Sandwich. A graduate of the Henry T. Wing High School, she attended Simmons College earning a BA in Sociology in 1957, and a MA in Education from Montclair State University in 1987. She was married to James H. Stoddard for 57 years until his death in 2014.
Nancy was a devoted teacher who touched elementary and special education students with her warmth, creativity and encouragement. An accomplished photographer, Nancy had a gift for capturing facial expressions, wonders in nature and magical moments. She enjoyed sharing her work with others, often sending photographs to friends, family and acquaintances. Nancy was also a passionate gardener, who grew lovely flowers, joyously sharing bouquets with friends and creating beautiful arrangements for family and church gatherings. She loved the arts and music in its many forms, especially singing, dancing and attending concerts.
Upon retiring she returned to Cape Cod where she and Jim built a home in Chatham. She joined and was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House. She enjoyed walks along Nantucket Sound even on the morning of her death. She delighted in her children and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and "Mimi" to many.
Nancy is survived by her daughter Kimberly Howard of North Chatham, her son Robert Stoddard and daughter-in-law Susan Sajer of Lincoln; sisters, Betty Fitzpatrick, Mary Ann Garland and Susan Hyde, grandchildren, Katy, Kara, Justin, Teddy, Kristin and Amy; nieces Christine, Vicky, Ruthie and nephews John, Joel, Peter and Jonathan; as well as many dear friends.
