ORLEANS – The Cape Cod Furies girls varsity ice hockey team might have fallen 5-1 in its opening night tilt against the Barnstable Red Raiders, but in spite of what the scoreboard read, the home team didn't go down without a fight.
Thanks to the defensive strengths of the Furies' Nikki Awalt, Connor Boucher, Margaret Dickson, and Charlotte Manganaro the visiting Barnstable squad was only able to net one goal in the opening period when an unassisted shot by Seanna McEaneaney snuck between the skates of Furies goalie Molly McKenna after a scrum in front of the net.
The second period proved tougher for the home team, comprised of players from Monomoy, Nauset, and Cape Cod Tech, as the Raiders piled on the pucks, netting three goals in the frame to take a commanding 4-0 lead at Charles Moore Arena.
A fifth goal in the final period of the game put any hopes of a comeback out of reach for the Furies, but Awalt and Manganaro joined forces with Boucher, with Awalt and Manganaro feeding a shot to Boucher, who was able to convert it into a score for the home team that might not have won them the game, but did erase a shutout by the visiting Raiders.
The game kicked off the official 2018-2019 season of the combined team, which travels to Marshfield on Saturday evening and then Martha's Vineyard on Dec. 22, with their next home game at Charles Moore set for Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. against Bishop Stang. Future competitors include Mansfield, Falmouth, Sandwich, Dennis-Yarmouth, and Plymouth.
