Mary Nickerson Laird, 86, passed away on Saturday December 8. She grew up in Chatham on Main Street at the top of Andrew Hardings Lane, with parents Lucille and Ralph Nickerson in her grandfather Jessie’s home. Her love of the beach and Chatham was strong throughout her life of living across the United States with her husband Benjamin Laird, who passed away in 2007. Mary and Ben met in Boston while he was in seminary school and her training as a registered nurse. They resided in California, Alaska, Maine, Pennsylvania and returned to Chatham later in life where they built their unique octagon house with a treehouse walkway and lighthouse garage.
After her retirement from nursing, Mary was an avid walker, walking all over Chatham and walking the Jimmy Fund Boston Marathon three times, the last time in her 70s. She was also an avid biker into her early 80s, participating in many events on Cape Cod and Rhode Island and her solo tour to Nova Scotia, Canada. Mary is survived by her brother, Gordon Nickerson residing in Costa Rica, her four children, Gerald, Timothy, Peter and Kathleen, 7 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mary Nickerson Laird, “In her new angel wings flys over the Earth – singing lustily with mirth, sending all her love to Kith and Kin above the Din!”
