CHATHAM- Donald “Chip” W. Howes, 66, of London, England, husband of 33 years of Catherine Howes, nee Hirst, died November 20, 2018 at St. Thomas Hospital, London, after a brief illness due to complications from lung cancer treatment.
A 13th generation Cape Codder and Chatham native, he was a 1970 graduate of Chatham High School. He received his undergraduate degree from UMass Amherst, and his MBA from the Darden School of Business at UVA. A career in finance landed him first in NYC, and then London in the early 1980s, where he met Catherine and embarked on a life filled with entrepreneurial adventure and the raising of their three remarkable sons. For almost 30 years he traded and invested in fine wine worldwide. His company is Modern Vintage Wines Ltd.
He was predeceased by his parents Eleanor R. and Donald R. Howes, his sister Donna R. Orchison and his son Angus Howes. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Felix Howes of Berlin, Germany and Toby Howes of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, his brothers Thomas A. Howes (Kathleen) of South Orleans, and Adam C. Howes (Leslie) of Raleigh, N.C., sister Debra A. Howes of Oakland Calif. and brother-in-law Alan Orchison (Lynn) of Woodbridge, Va. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews.
There is no question that of everything life in the UK offered, Chip found the greatest pleasure from a life filled with wonderful family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
A service of remembrance will be held December 19, 2018 at the West Norwood Crematorium, Lambeth, London, for family and friends.
