NORTH HARWICH — The death of a seven-year-old boy Saturday has left his family, his friends and his young classmates reeling from the loss.
Police say Damien Larsen was at his grandfather’s home on Main Street Extension Saturday afternoon when he was critically injured by a piece of heavy equipment, a Bobcat-style skid steer loader. The accident happened at around 3:15 p.m. at 106 Main St.
Harwich police officers and firefighters arrived and provided immediate treatment; the boy was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital but did not survive.
“Evidence suggests the death was a tragic accident,” state police investigators wrote in a statement.
The child was a Brewster resident and attended Stony Brook Elementary School. In a letter to parents, Principal Keith Gauley expressed his condolences.
“We are incredibly saddened by this event, and we have made plans to support students, staff and families in the days ahead,” he wrote. Teachers and counselors shared basic information with students Monday morning, and school officials were providing additional support for students who need it.
Firefighters added their condolences in a public statement.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the victim during this tragic time,” they wrote.
