HARWICH – Their last home game didn't quite end as the Monomoy girls varsity field hockey team might have wanted, but they didn't let a tough 3-0 loss to Barnstable stop them from claiming the 2018 Cape and Islands League crown with a commanding 6-0 victory against Nantucket on Sunday.
Monomoy put up a fierce battle against their Barnstable visitors in Monomoy's senior night showdown, but the Div. 2 Sharks couldn't get past the Div. 1 Red Raiders, who scored three unanswered goals in the outing.
But the lopsided score doesn't mean that Monomoy gave up easy. On the contrary, the Sharks played a fierce game, battling throughout for control of the ball and out-cornering their opponents 9-3 in the end.
Monomoy's strength showed in the fact that it took Barnstable the better part of the first half to net a goal, with the Raiders scoring with 3:05 left in the half. The visitors struck again twice in the second half when Abby Corey scored back-to-back goals before Monomoy's defense thwarted any further scoring efforts.
Monomoy head coach Jennifer Estes gave kudos to seniors Caroline Howard and Aoife Daly for their tireless game play, and junior Holly Evans for what Estes called her “outstanding hustle.”
“Each and every player gave 100 percent of their effort on the field,” Estes said. “Although the final score was 3-0 (Barnstable), Monomoy fought hard tonight and dominated certain aspects of the game. We were able to draw multiple corners, but could not find success in our shots.”
Of her two seniors Estes said, “They have both done an amazing job of creating a team culture that is cohesive and supportive. I have witnessed them grow as leaders this season and I am extremely proud of their accomplishments.”
Two days later the Sharks traveled to Nantucket to face the Whalers in their final game of the regular season, and their final league game of the year. This time Daly came away with a hat trick, netting three of Monomoy's six goals in the outing.
Daly scored her first goal with 10 minutes left in the first half to put the Sharks ahead 1-0 at the break, with Carly Dimock making it 2-0 at the start of the second half. Next to find the net was Caroline DiGiovanni, who made it 3-0 when she put one in with less than 20 minutes left in the game.
Six minutes later, Daly netted her second goal of the game, giving Monomoy a comfortable 4-0 edge before Jane Howard sent one in with 7:14 on the clock, with Daly closing out the scoring with her third goal coming with less than five minutes in the game.
Monomoy finishes the regular season with a record of 9-7-2 and was set to travel to Falmouth on Oct. 31 to face the Clippers in the preliminary round of the MIAA Div. 2 sectionals, game time 2:30 p.m.
