HARWICH – At Monomoy Regional High School, the All-Sports Booster Club does its best to support every athlete and each team, which means holding fundraisers that put the fun in raising much-needed money to benefit student athletes and the teams they play on. This fall supporters can tee off in the second annual Monomoy Golf Tournament at Cranberry Valley, a day of great golf for an even better cause.
“It seems like a natural fit on the Cape,” said club co-secretary Julie Santoni. “Golf tournaments are big and can raise quite a bit of money.”
Monomoy Athletic Director Karen Guillemette said the club brainstormed fundraising possibilities last year, unanimously agreeing that a golf tournament was a stellar idea.
“I know how successful they can be and how much money we can raise for an organization,” said Guillemette. “Collectively we agreed at one of our booster club meetings that it would be a good thing to do.”
“You can get quite a few people involved,” said booster club member Dave Gould.
The 2018 event will be held Oct. 8 at Cranberry Valley, home course of both the Monomoy boys and girls golf teams. Shotgun start for the 18-hole event is planned for 8:30 a.m. and the player and/or foursome fee includes lunch and a goody bag filled with Monomoy swag. There will also be a silent auction with a wealth of items donated from area businesses to bid on, and prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin.
Area businesses are also invited to sponsor the event and can do so on various levels. At the Shark Level, $500, sponsors will have a special shark-shaped tee box sign. The sharks were a collaborative effort, with student interns cutting out the designs from a special template last spring and current students set to add vinyl lettering to each upon sponsorship. Business owners can take their commemorative shark with them after the tournament.
At the Blue and Gray Level, $250, sponsors receive a corrugated sign bearing the company name, while Cart Level sponsors ($50) will have their business name displayed on golf carts. Each sponsorship level will be included in the tournament handout. The fee for individual players is $125, with a foursome at $500 per team.
“It's a good way to get parents and the community together for a common cause,” said booster club member Jay Guillemette.
Last year the booster club awarded scholarships to six graduating seniors and helped defray various costs for team purchases. Santoni added that each season athletes receive a commemorative item such as a Monomoy pullover, water bottle or bag.
“It's a good way to bring the community together and get parents involved in supporting student athletes. It also shows that the booster club is up and coming,” Guillemette said. “We're doing some good things and supporting student athletes. People always ask, 'What does the booster club do? Where does the money go?' We're able to showcase that by saying, 'We're giving out scholarships and supporting teams in need.' The money is going right back to the student athletes.”
“It's about building excitement around Monomoy athletics,” Santoni said.
