CHATHAM, MA – Robert L. Hughes, 84, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, August 30. He was the beloved husband of Terry Hughes for over 61 years, devoted father to his five children and doting grandfather to 12 grandchildren.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Bob graduated from Montclair High School in 1952. On the advice of his father-in-law, Bob enlisted in the Army where he served for two years. He then attended and graduated from Seton Hall University with a BA in Business in 1959. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Terry, they settled in Summit, NJ for the next 25 years.
Bob enjoyed a long career in the Insurance industry for over 40 years, 35 of which were spent at The Guardian Life Insurance Company in New York City. He rose to Regional Sales Director in the Manhattan office where he made many lifelong friends. Upon retiring at the age of 62, he relocated to Chatham, Massachusetts where he spent the rest of his life.
Bob was very active in the community throughout his life. In recent years, he served as a volunteer for Pet Therapy, the Chatham Railroad Museum, the local food pantry, and as a math tutor. One of his proudest achievements was the establishment of a local Pet Pantry. Bob enjoyed life to its fullest, from playing tennis and golf to taking photographs, to 'touching people in a positive way'. Above all, he cherished his daily walks on the beach with his dog by his side, Lance, Danny Boy, Duffy, Molly and most recently, Teddy. He was a devoted Christian and forever grateful for his family, friends, community and pets.
In addition to his loving wife, Terry, Bob is survived by his children: Sally Barre her husband Richard of Meyersville NJ, Robert Serling of Rockville Center, NY, Paul Hughes of Chatham, MA, Holly Hughes Hoyt and her husband Randall of Marston Mills, MA, Heather Robenhymer and her husband Timothy of Saunderstown, RI and his 12 grandchildren, Stephen, Brittany, Colin, Michele, Kevin, Sarah, Hannah, Aidan, Julia, Liam, Duncan & Bridget. Bob is predeceased by his daughter Susan Hughes Serling.
A Visitation will be held from 5 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, September 4th at Nickerson Funeral Home in Chatham. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, September 5th at Holy Redeemer Church followed by a reception at The Barre residence in Chatham Mass.
