The Chatham Merchants Association's Sharks in the Park exhibit debuted on the front lawn of the Eldredge Public Library last Friday for what organizers say will be its final year. The 60 painted, sculpted and creatively decorated sharks, sponsored by local organizations, will remain on display through Aug. 17.

Increased security is one reason the display is spending all summer at the library. Previously it began at Kate Gould Park – thus Sharks in the Park – and moved to the library at the beginning of July. Despite video surveillance and other security measures, the sharks were the target of a number of attempted thefts while in the park. On the lawn of the library the sharks can be more readily monitored, organizers say, with better lighting and increased video monitoring.

If you really want one of the sharks, don't steal it, bid on it. Online bidding for the creations is available at sharksinthepark.net. Half of the funds raised go to the artists, the rest to support merchants' programs and scholarships.
