HARWICH – Tournament season is fast approaching and this year Monomoy fans will have more than a few teams to cheer for, a testament not only to the strength of school programs but also its Shark athletes.
Softball leads the way for the Sharks with an overall record of 18-2 and a Cape and Islands League Championship record of 12-0, making it likely the Sharks will earn a top seed come June 5. This season saw the team defeat Rising Tide, Sturgis East and West, St. John Paul II, Sandwich, D-Y, Falmouth, Nantucket, and Barnstable en route to earning the league crown.
Monomoy baseball is also headed to the post season, currently possessing an overall 11-6 record, 8-3 in the Cape and Islands League having bested Rising Tide, Sturgis East and West, Bristol-Plymouth Vo-Tech, Nantucket, and most recently Martha's Vineyard. Like softball, baseball seeds are expected June 5.
Making the tournament for the first time ever for each of their respective programs are boys and girls varsity lacrosse. The girls, only in their second season, played to an overall record of 11-5 and a league record of 7-5 thanks to victories against St. John Paul II, Sturgis West, Cape Cod Academy, D-Y, and Sacred Heart. Meanwhile, the boys have an overall record of 9-7 and a league record of 8-4 with wins against Sturgis East and West, Martha's Vineyard, Falmouth Academy, D-Y, and Cape Tech. Girls seeding begins June 1, as does the boys.
Monomoy track athletes also had a strong showing at the state meet with Steven Young finishing in sixth place in the 800, while senior Tara Barry placed 16th and had a personal best in the 400 hurdles on May 26.
