HYANNIS ─ The Monarchs brought serious intensity to their senior night match against the Rams on Feb. 10, but were stymied at every turn from scoring while their opponents eked out a 3-0 victory that left more than a few fans shaking their heads in frustration.
It seemed the Monarchs couldn't catch a break during the game, incurring all manner of penalties from officials who seemed to look the other way more than once when it came to calling out similar infractions on the Rams.
In the end, the Monarchs were handed eight penalties to Upper Cape Tech's three, a ratio that didn't sit well with players or fans, several of whom voiced their objections from the stands.
The home-team Monarchs exploded into the first period with high energy, the Monomoy student section cheering loudly as Noah Tambolleo took off with the puck on more than one occasion. Unfortunately Tambolleo and his teammates were unable to get past UCT goaltender Will Hanley in spite of relentless efforts.
The first period saw neither team find its way to the scoreboard, with the Rams netting the game's first goal less than four minutes into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Though there was plenty of time left for the Monarchs to overcome the deficit, the aforementioned penalties worked against them, and the Rams scored again with little more than three minutes left in the second on a penalty shot.
The Monarchs put forth a solid effort in the final frame, but again couldn't get the puck past Hanley. Meanwhile, as the officials continued throwing penalties at the home team, the Rams capitalized on a man-down situation to net their third and final goal of the game.
Tambolleo was joined in his determined performance by teammates Will Wahtola, Josh Vinitsky, Cam Archibald, Owen McGovern, Kyle Gabri and Lucas Tambolleo, while Jack Daigneault made 15 saves in net.
At press time (Feb. 13) the Monarchs were set to host St. John Paul II in their final home game of the season, with their remaining games at Hull (in Bridgewater) Feb. 14, and Abington at Rockland Feb. 17 (time TBD).
