CHATHAM -- The weather was below freezing but spirits were warm for the town's annual First Night celebration.

Organizers were pleased with the turnout, even though buttons, which usually sell out, were still available as of 6 p.m.

First Night Committee Chairman Ron Clark said the noontime annual town photo was more crowded than anticipated, although there were fewer people around downtown in the afternoon than at past First Nights.  By the early evening, as both kids and adults gathered for the Noise Parade, the sidewalks were full.

The weather did cause some problems.  Because of the cold, the classic calliope carousel was cancelled, as was the horse-drawn wagon.  It was just too cold for the horses, said Clark.  Several outdoor food vendors also cancelled.

Watch this week's paper for more First Night photos.
