SOUTH YARMOUTH/HARWICH ─ It's been a tough season for the Monomoy field hockey team and the past week saw their struggles continue with losses to D-Y and Nauset.
The Sharks traveled to South Yarmouth on Monday for a rainy match against the Dolphins, hoping to avenge an earlier season loss. In spite of tireless efforts by the Monomoy squad, evening the score wasn't in the cards as the Sharks ultimately fell 9-1 to the dominant Dolphins.
Once again the Sharks held the hosts largely at bay until the second half when D-Y dialed up their intensity, which proved overwhelming for Monomoy's defense even as goalie Caitlin Bouvier made 16 saves in net.
Holly Evans had Monomoy's lone goal, capitalizing on a loose ball in front of the Dolphin net and sneaking it in to prevent a complete shutout, but that would prove one of the only scoring chances the Sharks would get for the game's remainder.
Last Friday (Oct. 6) the Sharks hosted the Nauset Warriors under the lights at Monomoy, opening strong but unable to hold on for a win.
After Nauset scored in the first, Emma Mawn evened the game with a goal of her own at the 20-minute mark of the first half. But three more goals from the visitors put the Sharks in a hole they couldn't quite climb out of, even as Caroline Howard found the net, narrowing Nauset's lead to 4-2 in the second half, but the clock ran out on any further chance of a rally.
Monomoy hosts Sturgis West on Saturday (Oct. 14) in a 2 p.m. match, with their next home game set for Oct. 16 against Falmouth starting at 4 p.m.
