HARWICH The Monomoy boys golf team is officially on par for a stellar 2017 season, especially if they continue with the winning ways seen in their first three matches.

The Sharks kicked off their season even before school began, competing against Nantucket on Aug. 31, earning a 116-77 Cape and Islands League victory in which Matt Veary shot two under par. David Van Sickle also had a solid outing.

Then, on Monomoy's first day of school, the team traveled to Willowbend to take on Cape Cod Academy, earning a 92-46 win to put them at 2-0 for the barely begun season. In that match Matt Veary again shined with a score of 40 to become the day's medalist, while Jake Poitras followed close behind with a 45. David Van Sickle posted a 47, with brother and teammate Owen playing to a 48, Ian Johnson a 50 and Nick Gould a 51.

Two days later the team enjoyed its first home match at Cranberry Valley against Cape Cod Tech, coming away with their third win of the season at 120-41. This time the medalist was Poitras who played to an impressive 38 on the par-36 course. Poitras competed against Tech's Liam Foley who shot 59.

Veary came in with a 43, with Tech competitor Nick Packett shooting a 51, while three Monomoy golfers – Owen Van Sickle, Ian Johnson, and Nick Gould – each played to a 44, with Van Sickle's opponent Jack Derosier posting a 48. David Van Sickle shot 46 in the match.

“The team had its best performance of the year with all six players shooting great rounds,” said Monomoy head coach John Anderson. “We take on our biggest rival next week (Sturgis West). After a lot of hard work by the players, we are starting to hit our stride and hopefully can continue the success and improvement and notch a win against Sturgis.”

The Sharks travel to play the Navigators today (Sept. 14) at 4 p.m. at Bayberry Hills.
