Celestia “Peggy” Vallie

CHATHAM – Celestia “Peggy” M. Vallie, 92, of Chatham, passed away peacefully August 2, 2017 at Liberty Commons.  Peggy was born March 30th, 1925, the daughter of Arthur Clark and Celestia (Eldredge). Her mother passed away after giving birth to Peggy and was raised by Cyrus and Roxana (Gould) Eldredge of West Chatham.

Growing up she attended the Chatham schools and graduated in 1943.  After graduation Peggy went to work for the telephone company. It was during this time that she met and married Guy Chester “Chet” Vallie, while he was stationed in Chatham for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Peggy grew up on White Pond and Oyster River where her family had a business.  She loved playing around the boats and shanties.  Later, she went on to work at Horn Cottages, the Corner Country Store, and Stop and Shop.  She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, being a den mother, and making her delicious baked beans for Saturday nights with the locals.  Peggy enjoyed knitting, bingo, penny sales, yard sales, talking on the phone, Red Sox, crosswords, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune; but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was also a member of the East Harwich United Methodist Church.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband Guy C. Vallie II, son Guy C. Vallie III “Skipper”, and sister Leona (Eldredge) Goodspeed. She is survived by her two sons Jed A. Vallie and his partner Mary Johnson and Charles A. Vallie and his wife Diana, all of Chatham; grandchildren, Justin, Jerica, Jeremiah and Ann (LeBlanc) Vallie; and great grandson, Jaxon Vallie. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their extended families, all of whom meant a great deal to her.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing Center, as well as Broadreach Hospice and Palliative Care for taking such great care of Peggy.

Maider, Justin’s golden retriever, was a great companion and big part of Peggy’s life. She was delighted when he visited her at Liberty Commons.  Honoring Peggy’s love of all animals, please, in lieu of flowers, send donations in memory of Peggy Vallie to: MSPCA Animal Shelter (Guardian Angel Fund), 1577 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11am in Evergreen Cemetery, Harwich.
