Summer is upon us here on Cape Cod and that can only mean one thing (other than an uptick in traffic): It's time for the annual Harwich 5K and Chatham Harbor Run road races, happening this weekend in their respective towns.

The Harwich 5K, sponsored by the Harwich Chamber of Commerce and presented by Koko Fitness, kicks off Saturday (June 24) at 9:30 a.m., with packet pickup taking place Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Harwich chamber offices on Schoolhouse Road in Harwich Port. Runners can also pick up their packets beginning at 7:30 on race day.

This run takes participants on a 3.34-mile course that starts on Main Street in Harwich Port and loops through local roads including Sisson, Forest and South before finishing in the municipal parking lot.

An after party will be held at Ember Pizza and fans can look for photos in the June 29 edition of The Chronicle.

The following day, June 25, marks the 38th annual Chatham Harbor Run featuring a 10K run and a 5K walk, both taking participants along scenic courses that make this event so popular. Routes traverse Stage Harbor Road, Champlain Road, Shore Road, and across the Bridge Street bridge with views of the water.

Longtime sponsors The Chatham Squire provides T-shirts for the event, with additional sponsorship from The Cape Cod Chronicle and The race benefits the Monomoy Regional High School Scholarship Fund and features a post-race party at the Squire.

The race itself begins at noon, with registration open from 10 a.m. until race time. Categories include 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80-plus, with trophies awarded for first overall finisher, first Chatham resident, and first finishers in each age category.
