Monomoy Regional Middle School

On June 9, Monomoy Regional Middle School inducted the newest members of the National Junior Honor Society. The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. On May 25, 2017, Monomoy Regional High School inducted the newest members of the National Honor Society. Nearly 70 students from Monomoy Regional School District went to the State House to present their Project Citizen research projects. The results: Best rookie: Mr. Walsh, Opioid Epidemic on Cape Cod; Best Hearing: Barnes/Matheson, The Greatest Wealth is Health; Best Portfolio and Best Overall: Barnes/Matheson, Promote the Antidote.

Juniors and seniors from the advanced ceramics and art club were participants in a three-part workshop with Nat Doane who is an educator and the Harry Holl Sculpture and Clay Studio Manager from the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Nat demonstrated throwing, trimming, and burnishing during the B block and G block advanced ceramics classes on April 11, and on May 17 a small group of students went to the Cape Cod Museum of Art to take part in a pit firing. Nat then brought the fired pots back, after three days of smoldering, and shared his final polishing technique. A special thank you to Nat Doane for teaching students this method of creating, finishing, and firing ceramic pieces. He also provided a video of his demonstration which can be seen on YouTube. Thank you also to Benton Jones, the museum's education and community outreach coordinator, and Michael Giaquinto, the exhibits curator, who provided this opportunity, and along with Nat, gave students a personalized tour of the exhibits currently at the museum. Thank you, Ms. Trull, for organizing this wonderful authentic learning experience.
