Harwich Elementary School announced the results from its first year audit of the " Fin"tastic initiative.

Here are some highlights: 100 percent of the staff surveyed could list behavior expectations, reported that these expectations were taught and had given out acknowledgments; 77 percent of the students surveyed could list the expectations, 92 percent had received acknowledgments; average bus referrals by day has fallen by 50 percent since December; average office referrals by day has also fallen 50 percent since February; HES received a total score of 83 percent on the implementation checklist for the first year. Full implementation usually takes three to five years. This score for the first year is a reflection of the enthusiasm of students, families and staff.

Planning for next year will continue over the summer and a parent university will be offered in the fall to expand efforts between school and home.

There were more than 150 entrees K-4 district-wide in the Eelgrass Contest, and each project was individually returned by Superintendent Carpenter with a special note attached highlighting some of the attributes worth noting. The combination of creativity, factual information and project presentation was inspiring. "Best Submission in the District " recipients: Owen Casey, HES kindergarten; Grace Whitney, first grade at CES; Quinn Maldoon, second grade at HES; Samantha Clark, third grade at HES; and Sophia Cohrs, fourth grade at HES.

Cape Verdean History Writing Competition winners recognized

Monomoy Regional High School finalists in the sixth annual Cape Verdean History Writing Competition were recognized Friday, May 19 at the High School. The Cape Verdean Educational Outreach Program is a special initiative of the Harwich Historical Society in cooperation with high school faculty in which the history and culture of the local Cape Verdean community is presented. Classroom discussions follow, after which students submit relevant essays or poems. This year’s theme was “the immigrant experience” in which students wrote about what it means to be an outsider and what role they personally play. Fifty submissions were vetted by student members of the Sandscript magazine which will publish the winning entries. Prize winners were selected by the Harwich Historical Society’s Cape Verdean committee. First, second, third place and honorable mention winners are awarded cash prizes by historical society member Barbara J Burgo in memory of her mother, Lorraine Annette Fonseca Monteiro. This year’s honorees were, first place, Darcelle Butter; second place, Nicholas Gould; third place, Danielle Andreasson; and honorable mention, Angela Baptiste. Other finalists were Shanielle Anderson, Francesca Barr, Bleuenn Conran, Niko Christakis, Benjamin Teele and Owen Van Sickle. Participating Monomoy Faculty were Lisa Forte-Doyle, Richard Houston and Angelina Chilaka. The Harwich Historical Society was represented by Barbara Burgo, Albert Raneo, Janet Cassidy and Brenda Collins.

MRHS National Honor Society Induction Ceremony

The Monomoy Regional High School National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 25. The ceremony will begin promptly at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria following the ceremony. All are invited.

Project Citizen Showcase

This past Monday students on the grade eight silver team presented their Project Citizen portfolios in a formal hearing to determine which projects would represent MRHS at the state wide Project Citizen Showcase on June 2 at the statehouse in Boston. While each project was worthy of moving forward only two could advance. Congratulations to students who completed "Promote the Antidote" and "The Greatest Wealth is Health" projects which won the portfolio and oral presentation awards, respectively. A special thanks to Dr. Carla Blanchard, director of curriculum in the Monomoy School District, for judging the local competition.
