HARWICH ─ After the Cape Tech boys baseball team took a four-run lead following the opening inning in last Thursday's game against Monomoy, the Crusaders were hoping to cruise through the rest of the game in good shape, but the Sharks had other plans and rallied back to claim a 10-6 victory.

The Crusaders kicked off the outing in top form, pushing across six runs in the first three innings of the game, much to the chagrin of Monomoy starting pitcher Christ Amezquita. Cape Tech's Jack Desrosier's two-out, two-run single punctuated the first, which also included a near-homer from Andrea Georgas that bounced once before hopping the fence, resulting in a ground-rule double.

“That was nice. That was a bomb,” said Cape Tech head coach Chuck Myrbeck. “I think that did a lot to wake us up.”

The Sharks began their battle back in the following inning, narrowing Tech's lead with three runs in the top of the third courtesy of hits from first-time starters Joe Cottle and Logan Routhier, who were brought around on a well-placed single to center from Nathan Amaker.

Eli Langlois crossed the plate next for the Crusaders, putting them ahead 6-3 in the bottom of the third, but the force was with the Sharks as Amezquita settled down to shut Cape Tech out in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, Monomoy was fired up, tying the game at six-all after five, and partially fueled by a terrific catch from Routhier in the outfield that set teammates and fans cheering. Routhier was also instrumental in helping the Sharks strike back in the later innings.

After Will Sosa swung into a single to land on base, followed by Sean Gould, Routhier laid down a bunt along the third base line that loaded the bases and paved the way for Matt Veary's single, Eli Nickerson's double, and Amezquita's single, all with RBIs to lift the Sharks into a winning position.

From then on it was up to Amezquita, who secured the win with a commanding final half inning.

“That was his first varsity win,” said Monomoy head coach Steve Wilson. “Cree also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He had quite the day.”

Amezquita's at-bats included two doubles and a single, with Joe Cottle in starting position at third with one hit and a sac fly with an RBI and what Wilson deemed “several excellent plays at third base.”

Amaker had three hits, two runs, and three RBIs, Veary two hits, two runs and one RBI, Nickerson two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Routhier three hits and two runs.

“It was nice to have the comeback win,” said Wilson, whose team is now 4-6 overall. “That bodes well for the future because you know if you've done it once, you can do it again.”

Paul Hadley had a stellar day for Cape Tech, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Derosier went 2-for-4, as did teammate Andrea Georgas, who added an RBI and his ground-rule double. Justin Lukas also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.

“Justin looked really good,” said Myrbeck. “Paul Hadley had a great game as leadoff hitter, with stolen bases, and he hit the ball hard and only made one out, and even that was hit pretty hard.”

Myrbeck also had high praise for Tech pitcher Alex Viera.

“ I thought Alex pitched really well,” Myrbeck said. “The fourth time they started going through the lineup they did catch up with him, but I thought he pitched pretty inspired.”

Monomoy's next game is May 11 at home against Cape Cod Academy at 3 p.m.
