It’s not often that athletes have pre-existing relationships with first-year coaches who are hired from outside of the program. Most often, players and coaches need at least a year or two to establish an understanding of the expectations the two sides have for each other. Monomoy Regional High School athletic director Karen Guillemette is hopeful the school’s field hockey team will be able to hit the ground ru...

HARWICH – Josh Wiggin is unapologetically energetic. His passion and energy are among the traits he said he inherited from his mom, Maureen, and they come out on the basketball court, especially when the Cape Cod Tech junior forward is having success. Wiggin was at his best — and most spirited — Feb. 3 when the Crusaders boys basketball team hosted Mayflower Athletic Conference rival Norfolk Aggie. Wiggin scor...

Late Scoring Touch Guides Monarchs Past Cardinals

By: Brad Joyal

RANDOLPH – Although the spark didn’t arrive until a little more than midway through the third period, the Mashpee-Monomoy boys hockey team made sure to capitalize on the moment when it finally came. The Monarchs co-op team shook off a slow start Friday afternoon to pull away for a 3-0 victory over Cardinal Spellman at Joseph J. Zapustas Arena after scoring three goals in the final six minutes and 24 seconds of...

HARWICH – The game quickly went sideways for the Monomoy girls basketball team. It seemed as though the squad was destined for a lopsided loss when it hosted unbeaten Dennis-Yarmouth last Thursday night. But the Sharks didn’t waver when the Dolphins exploded for nearly a double-digit lead in the opening minutes. They regrouped and began making stops at the defensive end of the floor, where they forced turnover...

SANDWICH – It’s hard enough being a high school wrestler when everything is going your way. Between training sessions and maintaining your desired weight, the journey leading up to each match provides a grueling test of stamina and mental fitness. With all of the hard work required to prepare, it can feel like a bit more than a gut punch when matches get canceled, a common occurrence as the sport that requires...

HARWICH – While the measure of a team’s success can often be traced to the scoreboard and standings, Cape Cod Tech girls basketball coach Chris Leonard is keenly aware of what his team is up against this winter. After missing out on last season completely due to COVID-19, the Crusaders are still making strides to return to full strength, a difficult but rewarding journey for a team comprised of mostly first-ye...

The dust has cleared and the starting points have been set. On Friday, Massachusetts high school basketball and hockey teams learned where they stand in terms of seeding for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s winter statewide postseason tournament, a new format the state introduced in the fall, when the MIAA released the first edition of its weekly power rankings for the winter season. ...

SOUTH DENNIS – The momentum is growing with the addition of each victory. The buzz around the Nauset boys hockey team is tough to ignore. The Warriors added another win to their pile Monday night when they skated to a 3-0 victory over the Dennis-Yarmouth/Cape Cod Academy/Cape Cod Tech co-op team in the fourth edition of the Codfish Cup at Tony Kent Arena. Senior Cooper Guiliano and juniors Cooper McIntire a...

SOUTH DENNIS – The spectators that filled the stands at Tony Kent Arena began to let their displeasure and disapproval be heard moments after the buzzer sounded at the end of overtime. It had been a long hockey-filled day at the arena, and it was clear the crowd wasn’t in favor of the night’s grand finale ending in a tie. Despite the audible groans and boos that came down as the Cape Cod Furies and Dennis-Yarm...

COHASSET – Monomoy boys basketball coach Dan Taylor wanted his team to be challenged this winter. The Sharks purposely beefed up their schedule to play a tougher slate of games, including Sunday evening’s non-league road test at Cohasset. Although the Sharks at times struggled to get their offense clicking in gear, there was little the team could do to slow down the Skippers at the defensive end of the floo...
