SOUTH YARMOUTH Though the D-Y Dolphins eked out a 3-2 victory on Monday against the Monomoy Sharks, the visiting Sharks certainly gave them a fight in the pitchers' duel.

Mollie Charest added another 10 strikeouts to her ever-increasing count for the season as the Sharks held their own and then some against the non-league hosts.

Monomoy hit the scoreboard first in the outing when Emma Thacher swung into a two-run single to take a 2-0 lead, with the Dolphins getting a run of their own in the fourth, making it 2-1. The Sharks held onto their one-run edge until D-Y's Meghan Coyle hit a solo home run to even things up at 2-2, with the Dolphins plating the go-ahead run in the sixth on a double.

In spite of the outcome, head coach Stacy Yarnall was pleased with her team.

“It was a pretty good game,” she said. “It was a great softball game. It was really fast-paced. Both teams made mistakes. We had some key hits. Obviously there are some things we need to work on with errors, but it was good.”

Yarnall praised the efforts of Hannah Potter, who had two excellent catches in the game, including one that sent her head-over-heels while still keeping the ball in her glove. Yarnall also gave kudos to Thacher's work behind the plate.

Monomoy opened the 2017 season with a 12-0 shutout of Rising Tide in which Charest notched 11 strikeouts while also going 2-for-3 at bat and hitting a home run. Potter was also strong in the opener with two hits, joined by Carlee Tolley.

Last Monday the Sharks traveled to Sandwich where they played to a 12-3 victory. This time Charest recorded 10 strikeouts and went 4-for-5 at the plate with another home run for her team.

Meanwhile, Potter added three RBIs, with Tolley adding three hits, Thacher two and Sam Barr also two.

The Sharks are set to host the Dolphins at Potter Field next Wednesday, a game Yarnall is hoping will be a win.

“We split last year, and I'm looking to do that again,” she said.

Monomoy hosts Sturgis West today at 4 p.m. and Sandwich on Monday, also at 4 p.m., with the D-Y game set for 2 p.m. April 19.
