Hertha R. Smith, 76, of Chatham passed away peacefully on January 15th surrounded by her family.
Born in Queens, N.Y. in 1940 to the late Erna and Paul Fischer. While vacationing at Montgomery Lake in Eldred, N.Y. she met James A. Smith, her future husband of more than 58 years, when she was 9 years old and he 13. They continued to visit together during these childhood summer vacations and later married and raised 5 children together, James, Christine, Mark, Matthew and Michael. Family and friends were Hertha's delight, she was an avid painter and animal lover, rescuing and adopting many cats, dogs and the occasional squirrel and robin throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, children and 5 grandchildren, James, Steven, Christopher, Emma, and Michael.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday January 19th, at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd, Chatham, MA 02633 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be sent to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
