CHATHAM – The municipal fish pier will be packed with young fans of Santa Claus Sunday as the Jolly Elf himself arrives in style on the historic Coast guard motor lifeboat CG36500.
Santa will be pulling in to the north jog at the pier at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 4, accompanied by a contingent of active Coast Guard members from Station Chatham as well as the operators of the lifeboat boat made famous by the 1952 rescue of the crew of the Pendleton, as portrayed in the recent film “The Finest Hours.”
After greeting kids at the pier, Santa will hop into a fire engine and travel to the community center, where he will take up residence at 2 p.m. to hear Christmas wishes. Children who meet Santa will receive a small gift.
The annual event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Central Cape Cod.
Santa's arrival signals the start of the Christmas season in Chatham. Next weekend, Dec. 9 through 11, the Chatham Merchants Association will sponsor its 38th annual Christmas by the Sea celebration. The festivities begin with a Light Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday evening, followed by a weekend of activities – including numerous appearances by Santa – as well as open houses, raffles and other events sponsored by local merchants.
