Harwich - Timothy D. Woollard, 63, passed away suddenly on November 2, 2016 at his home in Harwich. Born in Boston on September 23, 1953, his family moved to Wayland where he completed his primary and secondary education before matriculating to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, graduating from the Stockbridge School in 1973. He worked as an arborist for a few years before becoming manager of Gold Star Wholesale Nurseries in Hyannis where he remained for 16 years. For the past 22 years, he was privately employed on Great Island, West Yarmouth. Tim was an active and dedicated volunteer for Hospice of Cape Cod since 1996, an avid skier with the Cape Cod Ski Club and a student of Aikido for many years. He became a follower of Zen Buddhism in 1993 and travelled to Cambridge and Cumberland, RI to practice. In 2002 he began practicing with Jim Calvin in Barnstable, co-founding the Cape Cod Zen Center (CCZC) with him in 2003, becoming Vice Abbot of the Center. In 2012 he became a Senior Dharma Teacher with responsibilities at the Cape Cod Zen Center and at the parent school, Kwan Um School of Zen. On a daily basis Tim demonstrated the importance of being “here and now” and had an innate sense to offer his positive perspective and reassuring words when they were most needed. He created beauty in his yard with meticulous pruning techniques he had learned in Japan, providing a calming refuge for all who were fortunate to visit his home or to receive one of his lovely bonsais. He was a giving person who never asked for anything in return.
Tim was the devoted husband of Paula Riedl and the loving brother of Howard Woollard with Virginia of Barnstable; Winchester Woollard with Donna Nagle of Goleta, California and the late Harold Woollard of Cambridge. He also leaves his step-daughters Kim Elio and Lindsey Carnes with Michael Carnes; a niece and nephew, Deidre Woollard and Andrew Woollard as well as his sister-in-law, Georgene Riedl with Ralph MacKenzie and brother-in-law Robert Riedl with Linda Riedl and children, Joanna Riedl and Rob Riedl.
There will be a Memorial service for Tim on Sunday, November 20th 2 pm- 4 pm at the Cultural Center, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, MA and a 49 Days Ceremony at the Zen Buddhist Center in December.
