Carolyn Yeaw Coursen (Age 88)
Carolyn Yeaw Coursen of Chatham passed away with family at her side on November 12, 2016 at the age of 88.
Carolyn was born in New Jersey the daughter of Everett Yeaw and Francis Hinman Yeaw. She raised her daughters in Washington, D.C. and was a lifelong summer resident of Chatham where she retired. Carolyn attended Smith College from 1946-1949 and graduated from George Washington University in 1969, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science. She was active in the Republican Party and was the youngest alternate delegate representing the State of New Jersey at the 1956 Republican National Convention. Carolyn worked for the Government of the District of Columbia before joining the Office of Education, U.S Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She was active in the communities in which she lived serving on the national Children’s Hospital Community Board 1981-1983, volunteering at the Chatham Historical Society, and as a member of Saint Christopher’s Church in Chatham. Carolyn was an avid traveler who circled the globe with her late beloved husband, Richard Dennison Coursen.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Cynthia Yeaw; daughters, Carolyn A. Cason, Patricia A. President, Katherine H. Alford; stepsons, Timothy Coursen and Christopher Coursen; grandchild AJ Johnson. She was predeceased by her brother Everett Yeaw and grandson Justin A. President. A private gathering is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc.
