CHATHAM — A consortium of business owners and residents has signed a purchase and sale agreement for the Eldredge Garage property at 365 Main St., which the town had eyed for public parking.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Jeffrey Dykens said the coalition aims to purchase the two parcels of land with the goal of cleaning up any environmental contamination there so that it may ultimately be suitable for purchase by the town for parking or other public uses. Early plans are to demolish all of the structures on the property.
Negotiations are still ongoing, and a full environmental analysis of the site is expected to begin shortly.
Selectmen agreed to call a special town meeting in January so voters can consider the purchase.
The board of selectmen twice recommended against having the town purchase the property, largely over concerns about the potential cost of an environmental cleanup at the site.
