The first-ever Great White Gala Against Cancer will take place on Friday, Oct. 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Chatham Bars Inn to raise funds for The Jimmy Fund. The event will benefit multiple myeloma cancer research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
The event will feature a VIP reception followed by a general admission event with a Cape Cod-themed dinner, cash bar and both live and silent auctions. The auction items will include exclusive trips, vacation packages, a hot tub spa and a BMW lease along with golf outings and more.
Yarmouthport resident Jay Foran, a Dana Farber multiple myeloma patient, will host the evening with his wife Pam and children Patrick of Barnstable and Meagan of Harwich.
Last year, Foran was diagnosed with the rare form of cancer, which originates in the bone marrow and affects the plasma, creating complications throughout the body.
After much thought, and in consultation with family and friends, Foran entered into a Phase II Clinical Trial being conducted by Dr. Irene Ghobrial at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He is currently in the trial's 12th week, marking approximately the halfway point. Foran, Pam and their family have decided to give back to the caregivers and physicians/scientists to help find the cure for multiple myeloma.
“Dr. Ghobrial and her colleagues at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, as well as those at other Centers of Excellence in the United States (and throughout the world) are working most diligently in an effort to find a cure for this rare disease, which affects about 30,000 people in the United States annually,” Foran explains. “In the big picture of the incidence of cancers being identified every year, this is a relatively small number. There is no known cause for multiple myeloma, and unfortunately, at this time, there is no known cure. Due to its rarity, it doesn't receive a lot of publicity or research funds. I told Dr. Ghobrial that I want to be a poster boy and help find a cure. The least I can do is support her by organizing a fundraiser, with the help of my son Patrick, my family, and many wonderful and generous volunteers and donors, though I have never done anything like this before. This way we can combine her talents with my ability to raise a few dollars to support her work.”
Foran has learned how willing people in the community are to rise to the occasion and offer support, time, energy, donations and expertise to a cause like the Great White Gala Against Cancer.
“I feel blessed,” Foran says. “So many people have come forward to support this event and to contribute – I feel like we are already a great success. The support just blows me away. With so much negativity in the air lately, it is great to learn that there are so many generous, wonderful people. This will be a fantastic night. Please save Oct. 28 on your calendar as we come together to celebrate the works of Dr. Ghobrial, raise critical funds for continued research and help raise awareness about multiple myeloma and how our generation will beat this, and other types of deadly cancer. Thanks to all for your continued prayers and support. Without them, I wouldn’t have a chance!”
