MRHS Student Leaders Complete Community Service At HES

A “shout out” to Monomoy High School student leaders who donated their time and effort to their elementary school community by providing a much appreciated 'childcare' opportunity for parents/guardians. Their community service hours, once again, made our Curriculum Nights a success!

Grab-and-Go Breakfast

The school offers a breakfast program before school. This breakfast is packaged into a brown bag that students bring to class as morning work and routines are completed. If you wish for your child to participate in this program, please discuss this with your child. The cost of breakfast will be deducted from your "My School Bucks" account (free/reduced benefits applies for breakfast). If a student goes to the cafeteria for breakfast, they will be served. Therefore, if this is not your wish as your child has breakfast at home, please be sure to discuss this with your child.

Chatham Elementary School PTO Directory

The PTO is working on updating all contacts in its PTO directory. If you wish for your child(ren)'s contact(s) to be included, please complete the form accessible through the CES Scoop. If you have more than one child at CES, please complete one form for each child you would like us to include in the directory. Only CES students should be included. The directory will be published digitally and available in paper form in the main office for access to families in our community.

Tub of Tabs

CES is once again collecting aluminum pop tabs. Last year we collected a “tub” full of tabs for Ronald McDonald House as some of you might remember. This year we are collecting pop tabs for Shriners Hospitals. The Shriners Hospitals have collected pop tabs for over 16 years. Since the day they started they’ve collected over a half million pounds of tabs. Shriners Hospitals recycle the tabs and sells the aluminum. The money they make is used to pay for children’s medical procedures, therapies, devices and treatments related to orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. We hope you will help us in this challenge. The collection bin is located in the cafeteria.

Monomoy Is A Google District

All of Monomoy has gone to gmail as the primary email server. Unfortunately, this has caused somewhat of a learning curve at the beginning of this school year. Please, if you send an email and you do not hear back from us within 24 hours, reach out again either by phone or give email another try.

Dr. Coyne, Literacy Expert From UConn, At Brewster Library

Michael Coyne, professor of educational psychology in the Special Education Program at the University of Connecticut and a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral Education and Research, will speak as part of the Nickerson Lecture Series on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Brewster Ladies Library at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Reading Group Launches

The first MRHS summer reading book group event took place on Wednesday, Sept. 21 during the school wide enrichment block. Students had the opportunity to select a book from over 40 titles, read the copy provided to them by the library, and meet with staff and volunteers from the community who also read the text to discuss the book much in the same way adult book groups do. Food was provided, as was additional time to ensure all students had the opportunity to participate. Both students and staff are currently completing surveys to help us determine ways to make the book groups more successful in upcoming years. One of the English department goals in the Monomoy district is to help students develop the habit of reading for enjoyment, and this activity was designed to promote choice, inquiry, and engagement in reading. It is our hope that students will participate at such a level in the future that we may continue to offer summer reading in this format. Thanks to all the staff who took the time to make positive connections with students over reading, and thanks to all the students who stepped up and participated actively in their discussions.

After Prom Meeting

An important parent After Prom Party meeting will be held Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The junior prom will be here soon. An amazing tradition organized by our wonderful parents is the after prom party. The after prom party is a safe and supervised opportunity for our kids to attend after the prom. Harlem Wizards

The entire community is invited to the MRHS gym on Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for the Harlem Wizards! This event has been a sellout the last three years. Once again the MRHS faculty and staff will take on the Harlem Wizards. Call the school for ticket information.

Student Trip To James Otis Lecture In Boston

Mr. Houston and five members of the senior class traveled to Boston for the annual James Otis Lecture which commemorates Constitution Day (Sept. 17, 1787: the day the Founders signed the Constitution). Grace Drake, Sean Walsh, Jack Watson, Julianna Locantore, and Graham Smith were recognized as James Otis Scholars. The group also toured part of the Freedom Trail, toured the Statehouse, and visit Rep. Peake's office. The theme of this year's lecture was “Religion and the Constitution." The American Board of Trial Advocates sponsored the event.

MRHS On The Move To London In 2018

For students currently in grades seven and eight, there is still time to sign up for the Monomoy trip to London over April vacation in 2018. The trip is a seven-day excursion and includes touring both London and Stratford on Avon to take in the history, culture, and literary heritage of this beautiful place. Students will see several plays, participate in theater workshops, tour Windsor Castle and other historical sites, and immerse themselves in what it means to be a global citizen.
