EAST HARWICH — Increasingly, it's possible for youngsters to grow up on Cape Cod without spending any time on the water. It's a trend that Pleasant Bay Community Boating is hoping to reverse.

Last week, third graders from Chatham and Harwich clamored aboard PBCB's Flying Scots and took spins around Pleasant Bay, as part of the organization's “First Sail” outreach program. The goal, Executive Director Charlie Sumner said, is to introduce youngsters to sailing while deepening their awareness and appreciation for Pleasant Bay.

The First Sail rides were offered to local elementary students without charge thanks to a grant from the Friends of Pleasant Bay. In all, more than 400 third graders in the Monomoy and Nauset school districts will be taking part.

PBCB is registering students for sailing lessons for the summer season; details are available at www.PBCB.cc.
