Mary Jean McFarlane Loveland passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 in the compassionate care of Liberty Commons Nursing Care and Broad Reach Hospice.
Mary was born in Boston, MA to Hazel and James McFarlane. She had two brothers, Keith and James McFarlane. Mary grew up and went to school in Boston, but would work summers in Chatham where she would meet and in 1952 marry Theodore “Ted” Loveland. She and Ted chose Chatham as the town where they would make their home and raise their children.
Mary was an active member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and enjoyed participating in the Altar Guild Ministry.
For many years, Mary Loveland was the Billing Clerk for the Chatham Fire Department and felt a special fondness for her family of coworkers. Kathy and Peter Connick were like her own children.
Mary liked Siamese cats, gardening when her health allowed, reading about a wide variety of topics, and having philosophical chats with special friends. She also had a very wry sense of humor and was often, amusingly, prone to be easily distracted. She also liked to keep journals that showed Mary to be a deeply reflective woman.
Mary Jean Loveland is survived by her son James “Jamie” (Cynthia) Loveland of Atlantic Beach, FL; daughter Nancy Jean Loveland of Millbury, MA; granddaughters Francesca Jamie Loveland of Jacksonville, FL and Megan Shelly of Millbury, MA; greatgrandchildren Kelsie, Carson, and Bently Shelly of Millbury, MA.
A remembrance gathering for Mary Jean Loveland will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home on Crowell Rd., from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 13, 2018 followed by a graveside service at Seaside Cemetery at 11: 30 a.m. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com .
